One Kinsey number, five Klein components
The Kinsey scale places a person at a single point from 0 (exclusively other-sex) to 6 (exclusively same-sex). The Klein grid keeps the graded idea but splits it into components that need not agree. Set the single Kinsey point and watch the same profile spread across five components: attraction and fantasy run a little more same-sex than the summary number, while enacted behavior and self-identity run less — the dissociation a one-number scale has to average away. The component offsets are a fixed illustrative shape, computed locally and not stored.
Component spread: 2.5 scale points
The one number hides a wide spread: the same person reads differently depending on which component you measure — exactly the dissociation the Klein grid keeps visible.
How closely does arousal track stated attraction?
Category-specificity is the degree to which genital arousal is selective for one sex rather than another. A meta-analysis finds a robust sex difference: in men the response closely tracks the sex a man says he is attracted to, while in women it is comparatively nonspecific, rising to a wider range of stimuli regardless of stated orientation. Set the stated direction of attraction and compare the two profiles’ response to same-sex and other-sex stimuli. The model is illustrative, computed locally and not stored.
The male profile’s two bars pull far apart as the stated direction moves away from the middle — arousal follows what the person reports. The female profile’s bars stay closer together — arousal rises to both targets, tracking the stated direction less tightly. Arousal is one window on orientation, not its definition.
Stable orientation, shifting reports
Fluidity is not the absence of orientation but an added capacity for situation- and relationship-dependent change layered on top of it, and identity tends to shift more than attraction does. Set an underlying orientation and a fluidity level and watch reported attraction and identity trace their trajectories across eight repeated assessments: at low fluidity both lines sit flat on the underlying value; as fluidity rises the identity line swings wider than the attraction line. The perturbation pattern is fixed and illustrative, computed locally and not stored.
Reported attraction varies over 1.1 scale points; identity over 1.9.
The gold identity line swings wider than the navy attraction line — identity is the more changeable component, even though the underlying orientation never moved.
